Custom vs. Tradition vs. Ritual

Custom vs. Tradition vs. Ritual

##Custom
The term ' custom' originates from the Latin word consuetudinem, which means ' habit '. Thus, 'custom' implies something that one does out of habit . For example, my grandfather has this custom of delivering a speech at every wedding ceremony he attends.

##Tradition
Now, when a custom is handed down from generation to generation, it becomes a tradition (the term is derived from the Latin traditionem, meaning 'a handing down'). For instance, the custom of my grandfather has not been delivered to me. So, it has not become a tradition. But my grandfather was a Chelsea fan, so was my father; and so am I. Hence, following Chelsea Football Club is a tradition in our family.

##Ritual
As far as ' ritual' is concerned, its roots lie in the Latin word ritualis , which means relating to (religious) rites. Thus, 'ritual' is used in the context of religious ceremonies that are performed according to an age-old prescribed order. For instance, when my grandfather died, I performed a ritual for his soul to be in peace.
