Designate vs. Nominate

##Designate

1 Appoint (someone) to a specified office or post:

e.g. He was designated as prime minister.

2 Officially give a specified status or name to:
[with object and complement]

e.g. Farrukhabad is designated a district of outstanding natural beauty.

e.g. Certain schools are designated ‘science schools’.

##Nominate

1To officially suggest someone for an election, job, position, or
honour:

e.g. He's been nominated by the Green Party as their candidate in the next
election.

e.g. Would you like to nominate anyone
for/as director?

2 To say officially that a film,
song, programme, etc. will be
included in a competition for a
prize:

e.g. The film was nominated for an Academy Award.

3 To officially choose someone for a
job or to do something:

e.g. She was nominated as the delegation's official interpreter.

e.g. President Yeltsin nominated acting prime minister Sergei Kiriyenko to head the
government.
