1. Connect the end of one thing to the end of another thing. Connect a machine to sth.[USE connect to] e.g. The electrodes were connected to a recording device.

2. (In the days of human telephone operators) e.g. Connect a caller so that he/she can speak to somebody — [USE Connect- no preposition]

3. Connect two things together so that it’s possible move from one to the other — [USE Connect- no preposition]

4. Form a relationship or feel an affinity. e.g. Mohan can't connect with anyone any more.[USE connect with]

5. Get a traveller to a place in time to change to another plane, train etc. [USE connect with] e.g. A bus connection with the the early train

6. Recognise a link with something else./ To associate. [USE Connect- no preposition] e.g. I didn’t connect you at first (with your father) because you have different surnames. e.g. Jobs connected with the environment

7. Link to a power or water supply. [USE connect to] e.g. By 1892, most of the villages had been connected to the main supply.
