Alone/ Lonely/ Lonesome/ Solitary
####Alone
Alone is an adjective and an adverb meaning that no other person is with you. When we use alone as an adjective, it never comes before the noun (predicative adjective):
####Lonely
Lonely means that no other person is with you and that you are sad and unhappy as a result. We may choose to be alone but generally we do not choose to be lonely. We don’t use lonely as an adverb:
####Lonesome
In American English, lonesome means the same as lonely!
####Solitary
A solitary person or thing is the only person or thing in a place:
e.g. On the hill, a solitary figure was busy chopping down trees.
e.g. In the distance was a solitary building.
e.g. He was a solitary child (= he enjoyed being alone).
Done alone:
e.g. Solitary walks by the river fishing and other solitary pastimes.
