Near vs. Nearby
Some of the differences:
1. Word classes
Near= adv./ adj./ prep.
Nearby= adv./ adj.
2.Near as a Preposition (के पास)
It is usually followed by a noun or pronoun.
✅ The restaurant is near the station. ['nearby' can't be used.]
(रेस्तराँ स्टेशन के पास है।)
✅ She sat near me. ['nearby' can't be used.]
(वह मेरे पास बैठी।)
3.Nearby as an Adjective (आस-पास का)
It comes before a noun.
✅ We found a nearby hotel. ['near' can't be used.]
(हमें पास का एक होटल मिला।)
''✅ We found a hotel nearby.'' is also correct.
✅ A nearby shop sells fresh bread. ['near' can't be used.]
(आस-पास की एक दुकान ताज़ी ब्रेड बेचती है।)
4. Nearby as an Adverb (पास में / आस-पास)
It can stand alone without an object.
✅ Is there a bank nearby? ['near' can't be used.]
(क्या पास में कोई बैंक है?)
✅ I live nearby. ['near' can't be used.]
(मैं यहीं पास में रहता हूँ।)
'✅ I live near this place.'' is also correct.
5.Nearby का प्रयोग केवल physical distance में ही होता है, कहीं और नहीं।
